Alternative Futures Open House
On October 28th Design Workshop, the Steering Committee and the City hosted the Alternative Futures Open House at the College of the Ozarks, Keeters Center. Approximately 60 people, representing the community, businesses and various organizations, attended to provide their preferences on a variety of potential future outcomes for Branson.
The three alternatives presented include:
- Future Alternative #1: As Is Branson: A future for Branson based on “business as usual”. The City will follow the trends of the past decade including growth and development, annexation, zoning, community organization, economic development and business trends.
- Future Alternative #2: Destination Branson: Branson is internationally recognized as a place to visit and retire. The City will strategically expand their tourism offerings to attract a broader demographic, will expand upon the markets with air service into the Branson Airport and will include a variety of new activities for visitors.
- Future Alternative #3: Community Branson: Branson places a significant emphasis on the social fabric of the community and on providing the services and the jobs the City needs to be a balanced community. The balance includes economic, environmental and social sustainability.
We encourage everyone to review all materials for these alternatives and to fill out the Alternative Futures Survey. Instructions to take the survey are in the side bar on the right.
At the Open House three stations were set up, each representing one potential future for the City. Guests received a matrix that summarized the three alternatives and were asked to provide input at each alternative station. Each participant was given three green dots (stickers), three red dots as well as one red and green star. Green dots were to be placed on elements of the plan that individuals LIKED about that potential future and red dots were to be placed on elements of the plan that individuals DISLIKED. The stars were to be placed on his/her most favorite thing about the respective alternative and his/her least favorite thing. Download the results from this exercise (15 MB).
A short presentation was given to verbally explain the process to-date and to visually describe the differences between Alternative 1, 2 and 3. View the presentation given to Open House attendees. Attendees were encouraged to provide input at each station and then take the Alternative Futures Survey before they exited to explain their likes and dislikes about each one, in their own words. Six computers were set up for attendees to fill out the online survey.
The open house provided valuable information that will inform the ‘preferred future’ for Branson. The consultant team, Steering Committee and the City will consolidate the most preferred elements of each alternative to create a plan that meets community goals, that builds upon the City’s existing strengths and that can be implemented. Policies and actions related to the following topics will be formed over the next few months to help ensure the preferred future is realized:
- Land Use & Growth
- Community Design & Housing
- Economic Development
- Tourism
- Transportation
- Infrastructure & Environment
- Recreation
- Culture & Historic Preservation
- Health
- Education
- Safety & Security
- Governance
